When offered the chance to sit down at a low-key restaurant that, for the most part, was empty, but served what Adrian described as some of the best cheap food in the area, I immediately took him up on his offer.

“You must be feeling better,” Adrian said after the waiter brought our drinks. “You actually want to go out.”

“I feel better,” I said, nodding while sipping my soda through my straw. “I’m not looking forward to next week though.”

“Think of it this way, Jake—after this, you’ll only have one more week of treatment.”

“If I’m lucky.”

“They said two to four-week cycles. Besides—they got most of the cancer when they took the tumor out.”

“I know.”

Our waiter returned with menus and let us be for the next long while. After we ordered, and after the man departed to take our requests to the kitchen, I crossed my arms over my chest and took a long, deep breath. Adrian’s eyes flashed with concern, but I shook my head and smiled, which instantly brought out one of my boyfriend’s own.

“I hate to beat the dead horse over the head,” Adrian said, “but everything’s going to be ok.”

“I know.”

“I’m here for you. You’re here for me.”

“We’re here for each other,” I nodded.

Adrian smiled.

The flash of his white teeth was enough to stir butterflies in my heart.

It’d been years since I’d ever felt giddily-nervous around him.

Could this mean something great?
